The movie 'Opposition Party' is expected to dominate the weekend box office with strong initial success right after its release.
According to the Korean Film Council's integrated computer network, director Hwang Byung-kook's 'Opposition Party' solidified its No. 1 position at the box office with a 64.6% share and attracted over 73,000 viewers on its second day of release, the 17th.
'Opposition Party', which topped the box office upon its release on the 16th, is a crime film centered on a broker who profits by handing over drug crime information to investigative bodies. The film portrays the complex relationships between the broker Lee Kang-soo (played by Kang Ha-neul), who is in a symbiotic relationship with prosecutor Koo Kwan-hee (played by Yoo Hae-jin), and detective Oh Sang-jae (played by Park Hae-joon), who is determined to dismantle a drug trafficking organization.
Meanwhile, director Kim Hyung-joo's 'The Duet', based on the true story of Go legends Cho Hunhyun and Lee Changho, attracted over 13,000 viewers on the same day, recording an 11.3% share to rank second.
'The Duet' recently surpassed the breakeven point of 1.8 million viewers, with a total cumulative audience of approximately 1.89 million.
As of 8 a.m. on the 18th, 'Opposition Party' recorded a reservation rate of 34.3% and over 85,000 reserved viewers, maintaining its No. 1 position in reservations as well.
With a significant gap from 2nd place 'The Duet' (reservation rate 6.5%, over 16,000 reserved viewers), industry insiders predict that 'Opposition Party's solo run will continue over the weekend.
